Wes had a nice !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! the other day about turning his Outback into a decent camping rig. I’ve !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! a couple of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about my WRX fulfilling camping duties. I was going through pictures of our latest camping trip and found this.

It is the perfect illustration of current thinking in regards to transporting Scouts. There were exactly two cars there and only one made it into the photo. I am standing about half-way down the parking lot and everything behind me looked about the same. In our caravan, all eight vehicles were either trucks or SUVs. I borrowed my wife’s Explorer for the trip so I could carry four Scouts.

This is one time I didn’t mind having the Explorer. While I have no doubts that the WRX could have handled the trip, the final mile would have been rough on the air dam.

All of this got me thinking about my next car. Subaru says a turbo XV Crosstrek is not in the works, so that option is out. There’s talk out there about lifting a WRX, but I didn’t believe it until I found this:

Now we’re talking!

I scraped the front for the first time about a week ago. I pulled into a steep drvieway a little too fast trying to turn around. How do you think the stock wheels would handle rough terrain? I’d imagine you would want to downsize an inch to get a little more sidewall too.

You’ll wanna talk to the folks at Dirty Impreza. They have all the info on this.

I haven’t gone far enough down the rabbit hole to see, but the entrance is entrancing.

The stock wheels/tires terrify me. I drive several miles of potholed roads every day. Part of the daily driving challenge is timing the traffic so I can swerve to miss the worst of them. These are the same holes I just plowed through with the truck.

I scraped the front a few months ago when exiting the driveway at one of the local restaurants. I vowed never to return to that restaurant.
